Activities (July 14, 2011)

(i)Research works:-Now since the initial work of construction of ‘The Mahi Miri Research Centre’ of the society is built in our campus, Dr. Padmeswar Gogoi, a life member of the Society is planning to take-up some research works from the Society’s side. We will also encourage and try to accommodate other Research activities in our centre in the near future, if such offers come.

All our members and like-minded people and conservationist are requested to come forward to work for the causes we stand for and co-ordinate with their suggestions and mights- ‘Let us all live in harmony’ . Let the Kaziranga Wildlife Society march ahead to save the country.

(ii)Whenever felt necessary we have published articles, reports etc. in the media to creat public opinion for the benefit of wildlife and its habitats in Assam and NE States.

(iii)Visit to different NPS:-The society members, on different occasions and as per necessity have visited different sanctuaries,National Parks in Assam and raised voices against encroachments, tree fellings etc. etc.

(iv)Environmental pollution in and around Guwahati and role of Citizens to restore the environmental quality of the city, poaching on elephants of Nameri NP etc. The society helps the authorities of KNP during floods including holding of free medical camps. On request of civil authorities, Bokakhat the society also held free medical camps in the malaria effected areas of Bokakhat sub-division.

(v)The society has been ‘organizing seminars and study circles on a regular basis since long at different places like Guwahati, Nowgong, Mainakhorong (Deepar beel), Kuthari, Kohora etc. on various subjects like encroachment, dwindling Forest cover & Wildlife in NE.

(vi)Silver Jubilee:-The society celebrated its Silver Jubilee on 12th August 1997 at Kohora and with active initiative of a handful members we are organizing the ‘foundation day’, on this 12th December, 2006 for the first time.The society also proposes to take up new schemes like maintenance of wetlands in Pabitora, Kaziranga, Deepor beel etc.

(vii)The society has been participating in events organized by Forest authorities of KNP like wildlife week, Ban Mahotsawva etc, 

(viii) “Tourism through Community Participation” 
In KNP the absence of trained tourist guides is a long felt need. To neutralize the problem to the extent possible, the KWS sponsored the programme on 27th & 28th September 2005 at Kohora. Altogether 80 persons from KNP area and neighbouring Karbi Anlong Dist participated in the programme.

(xi) Dr. Robin Banerjee Memorial Photo Competition 
KWS started prize money Photo Competition from 2004, on the subject of wildlife and results are published on 12th August very year i.e birthday of late Dr. Robin Banerjee. Awards were given to the deserving ones.

(x) Supply of torch cells to KNP 
KWS has been supplying 300 torch batteries. per month to the KNP authorities since 2000 and continued till 2004. This was sponsored by Eveready Industries India Ltd.

(xi) Donation of steel enclosures for plantation to KNP 
KWS donated 50 nos. of steel framed enclosures usable for protection of sampling to KNP in synchronizing with ‘World Environment Day’. A large roadside hoarding was enected near GNB International Airport, Borjhar providing distances (appx.) to national Parks and sanctuaries of Assam from Guwahati. Sri Kaushik Barua provided it free of cost.

(xii) Environment education programme at Kuthori (News Letter, August 2003) 
Simultanously with free medical camp and competition amongst school children exchange of views with fringe people was conducted on 22nd & 23rd February, 2003.

(xiii) Renovation of uncle Robin’s Mini Auditorium (News Letter, August 2003) KWS members of Golaghat area took up some renovation work in uncle Robin’s (Dr. Robin Banerjee) mini auditorium where he accommodated his visitors to witness his valuable documentaries and hold lively conversations.

(xiv) Workshop on Elephant conservation. 
Ms Parbati Barua, renowned elephant expart and KWS life member and KWS Jt. Secretary D. Gogoi took part in the workshop on elephant conservation in the North East on 20.03.2002 at Assam Administrative Staff .College, Guwahati.

(xv) Environment Education Programme 
On 31.05.2002 & 01.06.2002 at Kohora an awareness programme was organized and participated by about 150 students from schools and colleges from around KNP. The programme was conducted by Dr. Padmeswar Gogoi, Prof. & Head of Deptt. of Botany, DR College, Golaghat.

(xvi) KWS regularly participated actively in the Kaziranga Elephant festival since its beginning i.e. 2002.

(xvii) Environmental Education Progamme 
With a view to agument the Governmental efforts and as continuous process of KWS’s programme on environmental education, a day long camp at Kohora was organized in 24.02.2001, the target participants being the teaching group of KNP area. Miss Carol Tepper (working in Grand Canyon of Colarado N.P. in USA as interpretive Park Ranger) and her father Mr. Donal Tepper, from USA took part as invitees. Ms. Parbati Barua (member KWS) internationally famous for her expertise in the field of training and upkeepment of elephants also took active part.

(xviii) Plight of the Elephants in Domesticity 
KWS took up a 10 day programme on captive elephants from 24.11.2000 to 03.12.2000 (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya) with active participation of Ms Parbati Barua, Sri Dilip Gogoi and Sri Aravindo Barua (all KWS members). An amount of Rs. 17,000 was sanctioned by GOI as traveling cost etc.

(xix) Declaration of Rain Forests as wildlife sanctuary 
KWS is one of the 12 NGOs who appealed to the State Govt. for declaration of Joypur, upper Dihing and Dirak rain forests of Assam covering an area of 500 sq. Km (home of leopard, Chinese Pangoline, sloth bear, elephant, Indian Bison, Samber, Slowlaris, capped langur etc.) as wildlife sanctuary.

(xx) Ornithological Studies 
KWS organized a day-long programme on ornithological studies at Pobitora wildlife sanctuary on 11.01.2000 where students and teachers from 18 schools and 9 colleges of the state took part. Mr. Moloy Barua of Early Birds and Mr. Kula Jyoti Lahkar of WWF co-ordinated the whole programme.

(xxi) Animal Treatment Camp (News Letter, December 1999) KWS organized a treatment camp on 27.09.1998 immediately after flood in coordination with Marwary Yuva Manch.

(xxii) Library at KWS complex, Kohora 
A reference Library named ‘Robin Banerjee Library’ was opened at KWS complex on 12.08.1998, the 89th birthday of Padmashree Dr. Robin Banerjee (expired 06.08.2003), a naturalist of international fame and former President of the Society. The Library was inaugurated by Shri Gaurab Bothra, ACS, SDO (c), Bokakhat. Apart from an amount of Rs .. 20,000.00 donated by Dr. Banerjee, a contribution of Rs. 2,000.00 was also offered by civil administration (SDO, Bokakhat). Further Rs. 15,000 was donated for the development of the library by Sri Bhupendra Nath Bhuyan from his LAD fund.

(xxiii) Rural Awareness Programme It was successfully organised at Geleki ME School on 08.08.1998, KWS organized an awareness programme.

(xxiv) Assistance to Blue Cross Society. 
Tezpur based members of KWS actively participated and assisted the Blue Cross Society in Dog sterilization, Anti-rabies drive and treatment of sick animals undertaken at Tezpur.

(xxv) Distribution of books among identified Teachers 
As concluded during the course of orientation and training programme conducted on 11.01.1998 book on rare animals and birds/Ecology/Endangered species and environmental problems etc. were distributed among the teachers of 15 identified schools.

(xxvi) Animal Medicare.

KWS opened a Medicare Fund by collecting small subscriptions through issue of Donation Cards and Coupons. From this fund the society offered medicines for treatment of ailing elephants of Kohora. Similarly an amount of Rs. 1000.00 was given to Blue Gross Society for use by them in procuring medicine necessary for treatment of Elephants at Nameri & Orang (News Letter, June 1998)

(xxvii) Environmental Education Programme
In a meeting (E.C) on 20.12.1997 attended by many persons including Dr. K.K. Sarma, Associated Prof. of Assam Vety. College it was decided to train up selected persons with a befitting scientific approach so that these trained guides in their turn could motivate the students and others to look after environment aspects in an atmosphere of ‘Joy of Learning’.
15 schools around KNP area were considered to be the best motivation agency and accordingly the orientation and training programmes for schools children are conducted on 11.01.1998 at Kohora.
