Date with a conservationist

Mike Pandey

Guwahati, Aug. 2: Schoolchildren here will get an opportunity to interact with Green Oscar awardee Mike Pandey regarding man-elephant conflict — a major concern for conservationists in Assam.

Pandey will deliver a lecture on man-elephant conflict at Vivekananda Kendra here on the birth anniversary of late Robin Banerjee, a prominent nature conservationist.

Kaziranga Wildlife Society, an NGO, observes Banerjee’s birth anniversary as Nature Conservation Day here.

“Man-elephant conflict is a serious issue in our state and many people are dying because of the conflict.

“Pandey had received a Green Oscar for his film on the issue. So we have invited him this year to interact with us,” Mubina Akhtar, a member of the NGO, said.

“Apart from learning from his lecture on man-elephant conflict, students will be able to directly interact with Pandey. The man-elephant conflict is assuming serious proportions in our state and our new generation should be made aware of the issue,” Akhtar said.

Many people have died in the man-elephant conflict because of the encroachment of humans upon forests and elephant habitats.

Sonitpur, Udalguri and Karbi Anglong districts have witnessed most of these conflicts in the past.

Six people were killed by elephants last month in Udalguri district alone and the conservationists have been struggling to reduce such conflicts in the areas bordering Bhutan.

The NGO had begun organising the lecture for Banerjee’s birth anniversary since last year.

S. Nallamuthu, a wildlife filmmaker, had delivered the lecture last year.

“Robin Banerjee’s contribution to conservation of nature in our state is immense but the new generation is not aware about his life and works. This annual lecture is part of our initiative in that direction,” the NGO’s president Abani Baruah, said.
